Episode 17: Building Endurance & Character in Your Business:

This morning during my quiet time, my scripture reading was from Romans 5:3-5, “… but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope. This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

Talk about straight at me! Wow I really needed this verse right at that very moment! It doesn’t matter what business you’re in or how well your business is run… It may be a well-oiled machine but we all face adversity, affliction, and just “stuff”. But one thing that I have discovered over the years is that this verse holds true. Through adversity and affliction, we find endurance and as this verse says, endurance builds character and character produces hope. Boy I should be FULL of character by now!

But with each adverse moment or situation, we learn and grow. Sometimes these experiences are easily learned and others are learned the hard way. So here are some steps to help you charge through adversity in your business.

Take a time out! Sometimes we just need a time out… Stop, find a quiet place and take a deep breath, meditate, or simply be. There are lots of meditation guides out there if you need help, just ask Alexa! I pray consistently throughout the day and make sure I take time to meditate and calm my body and mind each day as well.
Evaluate the situation. Take a look at the situation you are in. What decisions did you make to place you in this situation? Were they well thought out decisions? Were they made in a hurry or rushed? Sometimes I make decisions and I’m not really paying attention or seeing the situation clearly because let’s be honest we all have a 100 things going on at one time. Take the time to be thoughtful before making decisions. Is there anything that I could have done differently or went about things in a different way? We should always take time to evaluate where we are and how we arrived there. This helps us in making decisions in the future. Often times we put ourselves in these situations and sometimes adversity comes and it was beyond our control.
Talk to someone who has been there before. Let me tell you, I look to others who have been in similar situations. Remember I’ve talked about having a mentor or coach… Well I have several older women who have been mentors to me in my personal life and professional life. But in your business, this is where a coach comes in useful. Often times they’ve experienced the same things that you are experiencing and can give guidance in any situation.
Run the race! Through each adverse moment, difficult situation, enjoy the process. Yes I said to enjoy the difficult. During these times, we can learn many great lessons. For example: When I was in education, teaching. I thought I wanted to teach at a particular school. I mean I was hell bent on teaching there and tried my best to get on as a teacher at this school. After several years of it just not working out and God saying “No Emily, I want you at this school.” I quit trying and settled into the school I was at. Little did I know (Of Course God always knows best), this job was exactly where I needed to be, my children needed to be. This job led me to the home of my dreams, the job of my dreams, and also if I had not still be teaching at this school we would have never adopted our son, Jose’, who needed us. So enjoy the moment, sit back and take it all in. Through all the tears, hardships, etc. God has a plan for you and your business.

Boot Camp for Your Business:

So I have a challenge for you for this next week… Are you struggling to stay on track? Are you bumfuzzled and don’t know where to start? Well today I have some great quick tips on how to get back on track! We’re going to take 5 days to re-boot your business! So get that pen & paper and let’s get started!
So we’ve all been there, we get caught up in the day to day, working the grind. We get into a cycle of get up, work, go home, sleep, then get up and do it all over again… Losing sight of what we’re trying to achieve. So here are some helpful tips that you can implement this week. I’ve broken each tip down into a day so that you have time to complete each task successfully. Each one may take you an hour or some may take longer depending on your mess. LOL So here we go…

Day 1: Clean up your work space.
Today I want you to focus on creating a clean work space. Some of you may have an office and some of you may be working from your kitchen table. Believe me, it doesn’t matter what your office space looks like but, it definitely needs to be organized and clean. I find that this is one of the biggest contributing factors for procrastination and lack of production. I know if I can’t find things it takes me twice as long to accomplish a task or if my area is messy then I’ll put off working because “I just can’t deal today”. Have you been there? So today on day 1 let’s focus on getting that mess cleaned up!
Try using a pretty vase or your favorite piece of pottery to hold your pens, pencils, highlighters, scissors, paperclips, etc. Have your files stored properly. I have a file organizer on my desk for projects that I am currently working on regularly. For the projects that I previously worked on or files I don’t need everyday, they’re stored away in a larger file cabinet.
CORDS! AHHH! What a mess they can be. Be sure that they are tied up securely with a ziptie or are out of site. I don’t know about you but these can really make me crazy.
Place a favorite picture or two on your desk or have inspirational quotes written to post on your wall. I have various paintings that I love hung around my office, and I love inspirational quotes & scripture. I write these on cards and hang them in site so that I can glance at them as positive reminders throughout my week.
Now if you’re working from your kitchen table or you have a really small workspace then keeping it clean is essential for you. By keeping your area clean and clutter free you’ll be able to more efficiently complete your projects during your work week.

Day 2: Clean up your computer:
I know if you’re on your computer and working throughout the day it is hard to place everything in the right place. I am the queen of saving everything to my desk top! HA! Then when I am looking for a file it can be very daunting with so much on my desktop. Try saving each file, pic, or whatever you’re working on in the proper place. Create folders and sub folders to help you stay organized with your files.
So today I want you to clean up that computer! Use an external hard drive to back up your files. I use WD Elements External Hard Drive. https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Portable-External-Drive-WDBU6Y0050BBK-WESN/dp/B07X41PWTY/ref=sr_1_5?crid=298HA2EDVT0NS&keywords=hard+drive&qid=1664813333&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI2LjYxIiwicXNhIjoiNi4wNiIsInFzcCI6IjUuNTkifQ%3D%3D&s=pc&sprefix=hard+drive%2Ccomputers%2C158&sr=1-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0 This can be purchased on Amazon for around $100. Totally Worth IT!!

Day 3: Evaluate where you are:
Today I want you to meditate on where you are. What’s your story? How did you get here? Where do you want to go or where would you like to see yourself? Take today to really think about these questions and write them in a journal along with your responses. Things really become real and relevant when you write them down.
Do you like where you are? Have you become complacent? Are you being fulfilled in your work? If so, WOOHOO! That’s Awesome! If not, then what do I really want to do? What would make me fulfilled?

Day 4: Evaluate where you want to go:
Yesterday you meditated on where you were… For Day 4 I want you to evaluate where you would like to go or what would make you fulfilled. Take a moment and list what would make you fill fulfilled. Is it, being financially stable and what does that look like to you? Do you want to grow your existing business or totally start from scratch? Write some descriptive words explaining how you would feel if you were doing the work you loved. Joyful, fulfilled, energized, content, confident, ambitious. These will help you visualize what it will be like when you get there!
Again, be sure to write all these into your journal or somewhere that you can visually see them each day. This will help you stay motivated and on track towards your goal.

Day 5: Evaluate the steps necessary to get there and Begin Implementation:
Now that you know where you want to be, what it would feel and be like; let’s make a plan on how we’re going to arrive at our destination. Let’s really map out that plan! What do you need to do to achieve that fulfillment? Do I need more education? Do I need to do some research into other professionals in the same field? Do I need a business coach to help guide me along the way? (Side note: this is one of the best decisions I ever made and one of the best investments I made for my business) Find a coach or mentor in your niche. You won’t be sorry you did.
Create a vision board or implementation schedule to get you started on the write path. This can be a living, breathing thing, make adjustments as you go, but you have to start somewhere.
Then implement this plan! No more procrastination, no more “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Start TODAY!!! Remember “rejection is redirection”, Sumner Redstone said it best, “Success is not built on success. It’s built on failure. It’s built on frustration. Sometimes it’s built on catastrophe.”
I really hope this boot camp will get you going in the right direction and to fulfilling your dreams of success!

Tuesday Sep 27, 2022

All this said, I want to give you some takeaways from this trip:
It’s so important to unplug and have down time. In this crazy world and wild ride we call life we can get so caught up in the every day, mundane, rat race. Trying to compete, get ahead, or just be sure everyone has what they need or want. Now my children are all over the age of 21 but they still need me from time to time. And ladies if you have small children, I’ve been there! Believe me I know the struggle.
Some things are just out of our control and we have to trust in God’s divine will for our lives. Now look we were camping ( really camping, like no shower for 5 days), i.e. no cell service, no Wi-Fi or Internet. Ha! We had the music of nature, the running streams, waterfalls, birds singing, chipmunks. I’m not gonna lie, this was very much a real struggle for me the first few days. I’m not accustomed to not being able to communicate with my people… I had no contact with my business, family. Tough Stuff! Around Day 3 I began to settle down and deal!
“You’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with!” What does this mean? I am a full believer that my people that I have around me, surround me are my top people! I left my assistant, Heather, (you’ve met her in episode 3 “Wine Down Wednesday)… She’s my life line, my confidant, my organizer, my best friend! Saying this you NEED a Heather in your life if you don’t have one! I had full faith that she could handle anything that came up in the business. And let me tell you, I would not have survived our week in the woods without my dad, the first boy scout!
Having the right tools aren’t any good if you don’t know how to use them. On the second day we were completing a pretty rigorous hike. And when I say rigorous, my dad is almost 70, runs 6 miles a day and was kicking my ass! That day we walked around 20,000 steps and according to his Garmin climbed 161 flights of stairs, altitude of around 3,400… My thighs, calves, hips, ankles were feeling pretty rebellious that evening. But I digress, so about halfway up our hike we I started developing a blister on my hand. I spoke this out loud and my dad said, “It’s because you’re holding your wrist strap incorrectly. Well DUH! This totally eliminated the problem, Praise the Lord! You know blisters are the worst. With that said, it doesn’t matter if you have ALL the right gear/tools for your business, unless you know how to use them, you’ll develop blisters.
Be ready for anything!! During our hike the last day, we were chatting, hiking to the Grotto Water falls. This is along the Trillium Trail leading up to Mt. LeConte. At the top of Mt. LeConte is a lodge, you cannot drive there, you have to complete the 8 or so mile hike to be able to stay there. Along the falls trail up to Mt. LeConte is where the camels are used to bring supplies up to the lodge. Really cool huh! I’ll put the link in the show notes if you’re interested in doing this hike or staying at Mt. LeConte. Anyhoo! About mile 2 we rounded a corner and low and behold standing tall was a BLACK BEAR! Yes I said a bear! He was about a year old. Dad stopped dead in his tracks, starting backing away. He stood about 4.5 ft tall, and was waiting on us because he was curious. We weren’t worried about this bear but its Mother had to be somewhere close! In that instant I was thinking “I can’t get to my camera!” but “wait, do I need to run?” Ha! We “got big” and spread out, blew our whistle and talked really loud to them and they meandered on down into the woods. But WOW what an experience! With that said sometimes the unexpected can turn into the best experience!
Change is inevitable but hold true to who you are. I have to say that one of our favorite things to do when we go to the mountains is eat at the Pancake Pantry downtown Gatlinburg. This has been a family tradition for over 50 years! Even though Gatlinburg has changed quite a bit and not so much to our taste, we still have our little nugget inside the town. You better get there early, expect a wait, and order the Wild Blueberry Pancakes with 2 eggs over easy or my dad’s fav, the Buckwheat Pancakes with 2 eggs over easy. You won’t regret it! I’ll put the link in the show notes as well. http://pancakepantry.com

Needless to say our trip was amazing! Yes the bears might have run because we smelled so bad! But these moments are something we will remember for a lifetime and I’m sharing them with you! Hoping that you’ll get away from the hustle and have some down time!

What are Boundaries??? Have you set boundaries with your family, friends, and clients? If not then this is the episode for you
Boundaries! What is a boundary? Websters dictionary defines “boundaries” as a line that marks the limits of an area; a dividing line.
Everyone needs boundaries, whether it be in your personal or professional life. Creating boundaries gives you confidence and ease of mind that you know exactly what you expect from others but also what is expected from you.

What happens when you don’t set boundaries?
Burn out! Youre trying to please everyone around you and you end up stressed, cranky and exhausted!
Your customers, family and friends drain you of your energy.
You become very resentful of everyone around you.
Your sleep, health and your personal & professional life suffer.

No one wants to be cranky, in bad health, and stressed…

So let’s set some boundaries:

Boundaries with your Family and Friends:
Communicate your work hours and stick to them! Especially if you work from home, your job is just as important and relevant as a “go to work or to the office” job.
Learn to say “No”. You don’t have to be rude, just remind them that you have a set schedule and are unavailable.
Balance your work time with your family/friend time. What are your priorities? Mine are God, family, work, playtime
Establish an emergency contact method. How can your family reach you and you will know when they truly “need” you.
Boundaries with your Clients:
These are similar to your boundaries with your family.
Communicate up front your hours, availability and how they can reach you
Don’t promise what you can’t deliver! You can say “No” or refer them to someone else. Taking on more clients or work than you’re capable of only creates more stress, which leads to burnout, resentfulness, pour health, poor sleep, and suffering… NEGATIVE!!
A customer “emergency” isn’t always an emergency… It’s okay not to respond immediately. Again! It’s okay not to respond immediately! This took me a long time to realize but it’s OKAY! Consider, does this really effect the state of the nation or is it going to kill someone????
Boundaries with Yourself:
Set your work hours and STICK TO THEM! No exceptions, once you start it keeps cascading into more disruption.
Set some time aside to devote to your business, time to do the backend work
Don’t take on more than you can deliver, You want to focus on quality more than quantity.
Be You! Just because someone else is all over FB, Instagram, TicTok, etc ALL the time and seems like they have it all together… Don’t fall to imposter syndrome (you can listen about that in episode 10). Do What you do!
Prioritize what needs to be done and forget the rest.
Lastly, set time aside for YOU! Go get your nails done, a facial, or just take a walk. Investing in yourself is the best medicine.

You’ll find that if you set clear boundaries and stick to them, you will be a happier, more productive YOU!
